Ideas for the music video

At the moment I came across the idea of having a dream. I really liked this idea as I would like the music to be fun but also have maybe some sort of meaning to it. Here are some songs that I have considered:

I like this song as I believe I can create a dream within this song. One idea that I had was about a girl dreaming to be the perfect worker and be with an amazing supportive boy friend. I could also show the girl as being religious and being quite conserved as the lyrics of the song have many references to religion, this could be in real life.

This is my favourite song so far. I think that I would be able to show two sides of a girl just by looking at the title of the song 'Summertime Sadness'. Generally people would not think of summer as being sad and I believe that I can show two complete opposites by choosing this song. For me, there is a hidden meaning in the song that I would like to explore.

Alicia Keys is a well known artist worldwide. This particular song makes me think of something fun to do. This is because it generally talks about life and what a person could do and not do. I believe that I can show a variety of different scenarios about peoples lives. This could be done by showing how one person is having fun whereas the other person is fed up and has a lot of problems.

At the moment, I think I would like to choose Summertime Sadness as I believe there is something about the lyrics that attracts me. Also the beat of the song and generally I can interpret my own meaning of the song through my music video.  For  each song, there is no clear narrative which gives me the freedom of being creative with my ideas.

GENRE

The genre's that I have chosen for my music video are Indie Pop which is a sub-genres from Pop. This genre is an alternative of rock music that originated in United Kingdom in the 80s. I believe that the music I have chosen will help me think of creative ideas in terms of camerawork and narratives. I can experiment with different types of shots for my chosen song such as 28 thousand days. This song has a clear beat in it that I could pace my shots with. Three of these songs have a music video to it which will make it difficult for me to make my own video completely different and unique to the original.

Pre-lim, Crew Love

For my pre lim video I worked with another person to look at the process and techniques for lip synching. From my pre lim I learnt how to use markers in final cut as well as the audio wave forms helped me look at certain parts of the song to match the original audio of our shot. I added markers when I thought you can physically see the person emphasising a certain word or looking at the actual lip movement and then match then position the shot in line with the audio of the song. Here are some screenshots of using some markers in final cut:

In this screen shot I have used a marker for the word "yeah". This is because you can physically see the artist saying yeah. Furthermore I also used the wave forms to add the marker in.

Again in this screen shot I used more markers and slowed the shot down to look and the lip movement of the artist when she says "nah".

Lighting

The use of lighting is important for more than one reason, ranging from making it easier to see everything, to portraying a certain mood. For example, if little lighting is used, it would create a dull and sad feeling in the video, which would highlight what the song is about. Then if lots off lighting is used, it gives the impression that what we are watching is a happy and enjoyable moment. This is the 3 point lighting that should be used in a music video. I will be using this technique when filming my maser shot. I want my actress to look exposed in her pictures and her master shot. This is so she looks innocent and angelic.

I like this image as it makes this person look very innocent and heavenly. This is something that i would like to go for when doing my photoshoot. I want my artist to look innocent as i want my audience members to like her and also relate to her.

In terms of performance I want my artist to be confident and not shy when I ask her to do something different. I also want my artist to be well lit in most of the music video. I think that I would like my artist to be well lit throughout the video, so the audience members can clearly see her and get to know the artist. I want her to be natural.

This music video is a good example of lighting

The lighting in this shot is key due to fade effect being used. At first Beyoncé's face is bright on the left but the right side of her face is more on the shadow side. Also in the next shot the background is lighter than Beyoncé to show her body more.

This screenshot also shows how half of Beyoncé's body is in shadow but her face is well lit. This could be so audience members focus on her face when she is singing. For this shot one key light and a filter light could have been used.

This shot highlights BeyoncĂ©'s body through her silhouette. This silhouette was  created by using a back light behind the singer and a key light, which defines her body more. However, it is not clearly defined due to the smoke in the shot which makes it look very misty.

As you can see, in this shot the key light is coming from the right lighting up Jay Z but keeping Beyoncé in the shadow. Jay Z is rapping at this point which could be why the light is directing at him.

In this shot, the light used is very limited and it slowly fades to black. In this shot a one key light or back light is used. This could have been done to make Beyoncé look 'fierce' as shown in this shot.
